Black History Month

Black History Month 2023 is a momentous occasion to recognise and celebrate the invaluable contributions of black people to British society.

Black people have always been at the forefront of social justice movements, fighting against oppression and paving the way for change. However, despite their countless contributions to society, the achievements of black women, in particular, have too often been overlooked or forgotten. That is why, this year, we will be celebrating the exceptional achievements of black women.

Army Sportswomen – What Can You Achieve?

Craftsman Shema Wright

Although she has been in the British Army for less than four years, Craftsman Shema Wright has made the most of that time: not only has she qualified as a vehicle mechanic, she has also represented the UK Armed Forces (UKAF – the best of the Army, Navy and Air Force combined) at netball and played cricket against members of the West Indies women’s cricket team.

Race equity

Race equity is everyone's business, here at Sported we are working with our team and our members to move towards a more equal society. Working together to educate ourselves, celebrate and care for each other together, we are committed to bringing about a more accountable culture to sport.

Black leaders in sport network

The Black Leaders in Sport Network was generated in response to insight gained from Black- Led groups at Sported. It highlighted that action needed to be taken to tackle inequalities, and as a result funding was obtained for the development of this Network.

Over the last year the Race Equity Lead has supported the facilitation of establishing a Black Leaders in Sport Network Working Group. The working group consists of 12 Black members all of which are linked to Sported. The working group have established a vision and mission and the next step is about defining the purpose and priorities.

Black-led groups within Sported and externally will play a vital role inputting to the focus of the Black Leaders in Sport Network, so we are encouraging everyone that gets contacted in the coming months to get involved, or share with the relevant links it will have an impact on.

This is an exciting time for positive disruption and a step change to tackling and improving inequalities, so please continue to watch this space as big things are on the horizon.

Race equity signposting

A report from UK Sport working group led by the five Sports Councils responsible for investing in and growing sport across the UK, this group has met regularly over the past year, and quickly established the Tackling Racism and Racial Inequality in Sport Review (TRARIIS). This was to help better understand if the Councils were doing enough to understand the context and tackle the issues involved.
